My First Days As A Teleworking Woman

The main reason for deciding to quit my job and start working from home was Beatriz, my four years old daughter.

I felt so bad for leaving early to my office while Beatriz was sleeping. Each morning I sneaked away to avoid my baby seeing me. I felt terrible when I had to go and she stayed crying for mom.

I didn't like depending on other people to look after my child, even if I was lucky to find a nice woman who worked at home. She wasn't a part of my family and I didn't want that for Beatriz.

I was constantly worried at the office, specially when I had a call from home. I knew first time parents sometimes took everything too seriously but anyway, I felt that way. In fact, I think much of the stress I had was because I couldn't spend more time with my little one.
Looking back at those days now I know I made the right choice. Leaving a job after being there for seven years could sound drastic, but it was one of the best decisions in my life. Now I can work from home, I'm with Alexis, my husband, and I'm always there when Beatriz needs me.

One of the first things I had to do as a novice teleworker was taking care of my time. We women like to do so many things, it's a natural thing for many of us. At first it was a little complicated balancing my time between the new job at home and my role as a mother and wife.

I wanted this new stage in my life to work, that's why started setting up some goals for myself. You have to find your space and create your own methods for things to run.

Beatriz suddenly had mom at home all day and, of course, she thought I could be playing endless hours with her. I enjoy being a lot of time with my daughter, I am with her much more time than any dad or mom in a regular job could wish, but that didn't mean I could forget about my other duties.

I needed some patience to teach Bea than whenever mom sits in front of her computer she's doing something important. I told her that was how I could earn money without leaving home and thanks to that we could be more time together.

Now, when I'm working a few feet from her room, my little baby watches cartoons or her Barbie movies, cooks for her daughter (she has a plastic tiny girl: Pepita) or runs for her life while a big orc, her dad, chases her all over the house.

It's working! Sometimes we shuffle things a little during the week just for having fun. We can do it. I'm my own boss, I can do what I want, remember?

I'm sure Beatriz is getting so much from this experience. She already knows how important work is and how reading and learning help to get what we want in life.

Alexis, Beatriz and I are having a great time. I feel fine. Yep! I'm a teleworking woman.

This is the first part of my series experiences of a teleworking woman. In the next article I will talk about motivation and teleworking. See you there!
